Luminary committee makes a request
At the Captain's Night meeting on Thursday an interesting item was noted.
Last year, the Luminaries committee decided to change its displaying method for the 10 p.m. Luminary Ceremony. Instead of placing sand in a bag with the tea-light candle, a local company donated lumber so a volunteer could cut and then drill 2,100 wooden blocks to be placed inside the luminary bag.
Last year's Relay For Life included the sale of 1983 luminaries to remember either those who have died of cancer or to recognize people continuing to battle the disease.
However, the next morning, after the blocks were organized for storage, so they could be utilized again this year, just under 100 were missing. The committee recognizes this to be an innocent mistake as a souvenir from Relay can always be the candle and labelled bag, but the wooden blocks were intended to be re-used again and again.
The Relay For Life organizing committee would kindly ask any participants from last year, that if they have a wooden block from their luminary, could it be returned to the Canadian Cancer Society office at 65 Springbank North.
In the meantime, the Luminary sub-committee will soon be placing displays at various businesses around Woodstock to promote sales -- $5 each. You may also buy a Luminary on-line at www.relayforlife.ca/woodstock. They will also have a booth at the fairgrounds' Saturday farm market on three consecutive weekends -- May 25, June 1 and 8, plus a table at the May 11th FUNdraiser Day at Zellers / Foodland parking lot.

Corporate sponsors recognized on posters
Piles of posters promoting Relay For Life
Off the presses !
Or at least, falling off the photo-copier of the Canadian Cancer Society's Oxford unit office at 65 Springbank North in Woodstock yesterday was a stack of posters to promote Relay For Life, June 14-15 at College Avenue Secondary School.
The volunteer spirit is alive and strong with the CCS locally, whether it be Daffodil sales during April or the huge crew which donates its time to making Relay For Life such a success.
In Oxford County alone, the volunteer driving program in 2012 included 1835 free patient trips for doctor visits and chemo appointments. Relating those numbers in a different way: 109 cancer patients residing in Oxford were transported 96,062 km in their battle against cancer -- thanks to volunteers.
In 2012, Relay For Life raised over $310,000 in Woodstock alone and $553,000 when Ingersoll and Tillsonburg numbers are compiled.
If you want to be involved in Relay For Life in your closest community, contact Jose Atkinson today at (519) 537-5592.

Captain's Nights motivate Relay teams
April 18 and May 15 are important dates . . .
The Relay For Life calendar has many benchmark dates as the actual Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) event approaches, June 14-15 at CASS.
The Captain's Nights this year are Thursday, April 18 and Wednesday, May 15 -- both 6:30 p.m. at Fanshawe College on Finkle Street.
The entire steering committee attends -- most notable co-chairs Kim Whitehead and Keri Axon, along with team recruitment committee chair Beth Boulard. (ebaboulard@rogers.com or 519 533-1808)
At a Captain's Night there are many topics discussed, including registering your team (www.relayforlife.ca/woodstock) -- if you haven't already, but also learning about fundraising and the CCS, recruiting team members, selecting your campsite, receive info on other related events like the FUNdraising Day on May 11 at Zellers / Foodland, and receiving motivation to assist in making 2013 the best year ever for Relay For Life in Woodstock.
It will be difficult to top the 2012 numbers of 86 teams and more than $310,000 raised, but it can be accomplished.

Many activities lead up to Relay For Life
It is fun to raise money
FUNdraising Day is May 11 at Zellers parking lot
The road to the track.
Many events happen surrounding the Relay For Life actual night of June 14-15 at the track at College Avenue Secondary School.
There are Captain's Nights at Fanshawe College (Both at 6:30; April 18 and May 15).
Many teams plan special days to raise dollars for the Canadian Cancer Society -- barbecues, hot cross buns sales, special flower sales, etc.
Fun Fun Fun !
One busy day to circle on your calendar is Saturday, May 11 for the (second annual) Relay For Life FUNdraising Day in the Zellers / Foodland parking lot. Starting early in the morning (7 a.m.), this multi-team fundraiser will feature: barbecues, yard sales, penny sales, baked goods, car show, car washing, face painting for kids, face painting for adults, flower stand (it's Mother's Day weekend), games for all ages, and cotton candy. Be sure to register your team's activity through either Beth Boulard (ebaboulard@rogers.com) or Jason Stubbe (jasons@stubbes.org). Jason and Darlene Stubbe can also be reached via phone at (519) 449-2995. An unofficial goal is $16,000 for the day.
