Giving of your time; giving of your money to cancer research

Corporate donations and hundreds of volunteers at Relay
Beginning with the dozens upon dozens of volunteers, congratulations on making the 2015 Relay For Life in Woodstock so successful.
The committee realizes that more than 98% of participants are truly volunteers at Relay and everyone answers the question: #WhyIRelay.
Volunteers are needed in various capacities with registrations and selling luminaries. Volunteers set up the track at CASS by building a stage, unfolding tents, wiring up generators and plugging in the sound system. Volunteers are everywhere in the food tent and many more were inside CASS preparing caesar salad or cutting lasagna trays. Volunteers are everywhere! We thank the Woodstock Camera Club, Lions Club, CASS students, Shrine clowns, Fanshawe College, and Woodstock Police colour guard. Music performers Terry Empey, Them Again and The Grapes entertained.
Participants are also volunteers as you collect pledges and raise important dollars through various other projects such as bake sales and garage sales.

Relay For Life is successful thanks to many corporate donors and in-kind assistance from businesses and the City of Woodstock. From overall event sponsor Western General (Economical insurance), to Kinsdale Carriers as luminary sponsor, to media sponsors Heart FM and The Sentinel-Review, -- the Canadian Cancer Society is grateful to everyone listed on this ad along with anyone that may have been forgotten.
Look at the list of contributors on the ad and support those who support the CCS.
See you in 2016 !
However, continue to watch this space for updates and news about Relay For Life.

If you have any comments or suggestions, send them to Liz Wismer-VanMeer at: lwismer-vanmeer@ontario.cancer.ca
By the way, the committee is also always looking for more volunteer assistance.

Countdown to Relay For Life 2015

Accept the baton
Still time to sign up for Relay For Life in Woodstock

By Mark Schadenberg
Relay For Life steering committee

The slogan might be 'Accept The Baton', but for the Canadian Cancer Society's (CCS) Relay For Life, the motto could read 'accept the challenge.'
The challenge is to raise money for cancer research projects in an effort to find a cure. The CCS has many additional challenges, however.
Relay For Life in Woodstock is Saturday, June 13, 6 p.m. - midnight at College Avenue Secondary School. Registrations begin at 4 p.m. and dinner is served, beginning at 5 p.m. The infield of the CASS track will still resemble a tent city, but there is no formal numbering and site designations this year.
As can be seen, the format has been modified from previous years, but the challenge remains the same.
“Statistics note that 210 Canadians die every single day from cancer,” notes Jan Cunningham, manager of the Oxford community CCS office.
The CCS in Oxford has about 1,200 volunteers in total, adds Cunningham, many working to make Relay For Life in Woodstock, Tillsonburg (June 6) and Ingersoll (June 19) successful, but the organization also has, for example, 70 volunteer drivers who escort patients to doctors appointment and chemotherapy sessions.

“Relay For Life is the signature event in Ontario for the cancer society,” says Cunningham.
Cancer research is only a small part of where Relay For Life dollars are directed, however, as there is also advocacy and education.
“Cancer prevention is important,” continues Cunningham. “We know that about half of all cancers can be prevented. We encourage screening and early detection too. People can know that our office is there for you to come in and talk to us.”
The CCS office is at 65 Springbank Ave North in Woodstock (519 537-5592) and the national websites of www.cancer.ca www.relayforlife.ca/woodstock are also an integral resource.
Relay For Life in Woodstock is a 6-hour walk this year after previously organized as an all-night walk for participants.
Everybody at Relay this year must register. The fee is $25 if you have not registered by an earlier date, but this includes the meal. Survivors, by the way, register for $10.
“There's still time to register,” says Cunningham. “You can register online and set your modest fundraising goal.
“We also value all our volunteers and it's not too late to sign up as a Relay volunteer.”

All participants and volunteers will be fed, so there is a separate sub-committee for the food tent where coordinating for a crowd of more than 500 is complex, but made easier from sponsors Boston Pizza, Swiss Chalet, Pita Hut, Joe's Lunch, No Frills, and of course Tim Horton's.
“It's a challenge organizing the food for such a large group,” says Deb Sutherland. “We have quite a list – our own logistics checklist as we plan our volunteers to set up, pick up supplies, serve the food and of course clean up.”
Sutherland joined the organization of Relay For Life because both her mom and a sister-in-law died from cancer.
“I just wanted to help out. We're all trying to find a cure. Everybody is touched by cancer in some way,” Sutherland says.

Relay For Life also includes a solemn Luminary ceremony at 8:45 to remember those who have passed away from cancer, but also to recognize survivors. Luminaries are $5 and can be purchased online and also at the event. The Luminary committee sponsor is Kinsdale Carriers again this year, while sponsors for the word 'HOPE' as it is changed to 'CURE' during the ceremony area Oxford Gardens retirement home, Smith-LeRoy Funeral Home and McFarlan Rowlands insurance.
On stage entertainment keeps the feet moving around the track with well-known local band Green Onions, along with George Straight cover singer Terry Empey among those in the night's lineup.

Wismer returns (for one morning) to Heart FM airwaves

Drive-Thru Pledge-A-Thon held at studios of 104.7 FM

Liz Wismer-VanMeer is no longer the co-star of the morning show on Heart FM (104.7 FM) in Woodstock, but the Canadian Cancer Society fundraising coordinator continued with her 8th annual drive-thru pledge-a-thon in the radio station's parking lot on June 5, 6 - 9 a.m.
Promoting Relay For Life (June 13 at CASS) on the radio was a natural extension to her broadcasting on Heart FM and is now a way to gain additional recognition for CCS wearing her new hat.
Pictured is Liz Wismer-VanMeer and CCS Oxford community office manager Jan Cunningham during today's pledge-a-thon. Many thanks to all contributors and also to Tim Horton's.

Don't forget another annual lead-up to Relay fundraiser is the barbecue at Woodstock Print & Litho on Springbank Ave South on Friday, June 12.
Call in your advance orders at 519 537-6239.
Don't forget Bank Night is on Tuesday, June 9 at CASS. Contact Karen Hume to book a time.
Feel free to contact the CCS anytime at (519) 537-5592.

Drive-thru pledge-a-thon will return to Heart FM

Morning of June 5 is date to stop by parking lot at 104.7 FM

More great news for Relay For Life 2015 !!
For several years, Liz Wismer-VanMeer hosted a drive-thru pledge-a-thon in the parking lot of Heart FM leading up to Relay For Life. We all remember, Liz was morning co-host / news anchor -- alongside Paul Laing at the Woodstock radio station.
When at the station, Liz always gave big promotion to the Canadian Cancer Society and her team Girlz Night Out.
Today, Liz works for the Canadian Cancer Society in many fundraising roles, including Relay For Life.  She requested permission from Heart FM (104.7 FM) to host a drive-thru event again this year, and it's going to happen again !!!

"Heart FM has graciously allowed me to come back again this year and hold the fundraiser on Friday June 5from 6 to 9 am at the Heart FM parking lot. I will be there shortly before  6 am with coffee from Tim Hortons," said Wismer-VanMeer in a committee email.

Thanks again to Heart FM and its staff. Be sure to stop by to say 'HI!' on June 5.

VOLUNTEER EFFORTS
In the meantime, if you would like to volunteer in any capacity for Relay For Life, be sure to contact the CCS office in Woodstock. If you have a background in bookkeeping or carpentry, there's a spot for you on the Relay organizational team.

Purchase your Luminary for Relay For Life

LUMINARY Sales!
There are several places over the next few weeks to purchase a Luminary leading up to the June 13th Relay For Life.
The picture here is the display at Scotiabank on Dundas Street. Both Woodstock branches are selling Luminaries again this year.
Saturday, May 23rd is the giant Rummage Sale at the Foodland parking lot on Dundas. You may purchase a Luminary there.
May 22 and 23 are the blitz days. Check out Foodland, Food Basics, No Frills and other grocery / retail stores for a booth set up promoting Luminary sales.
For the next 3 Saturdays, you may also purchase your Luminaries at the Woodstock farm market on Saturday mornings at the Woodstock Fairgrounds on Nellis Steet.
You can also buy Luminaries at Relay For Life at CASS on Saturday, June 13.
Marie Bowerman (right in photo) and her committee continue to do a fantastic job on this integral part of Relay For Life - honouring those who lost their battle with cancer and also recognizing survivors and those who continue on their journey for a cure.

Lots of information at 'Relay For Life' Information Night

Exactly one month before Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser in Woodstock

Fundraising should be personal -- explain why you Relay

The Relay For Life 'Information Night' on May 13 marked exactly one month from the 2015 event in Woodstock in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.
It was a good opportunity for Oxford community office manager Jan Cunningham to stand behind a podium and talk about fundraising with the many registered participants attending the session at Fanshawe College.
“When working on your fundraising plan – make it personal and you'll raise more money. Tell your friends and family why you Relay,” said Cunningham, who added that this philosophy also works when you're not face-to-face with your hopeful sponsors.
“Add your picture to your request on Facebook and in social media and be sure to show your gratitude as well.”
Jan Cunningham and long-time Relay organizer and CCS Oxford board member John Hunt

Relay For Life (www.relayforlife.ca/woodstock) is at CASS high school on Saturday, June 13 with Opening Ceremonies planned for 6 p.m. This is actually a time change from previous years when Relay was a 7 p.m. - 7 a.m. walk around the track and the Opening Ceremony was at 6:45.
The Survivors' Lap will be immediately after an address from organizers and will begin around 6:30.
With Relay For Life now ending at midnight and with participants wanting to enjoy as many moments as possible with the lit Luminaries, the Luminary Ceremony will now be at 8:45 p.m. (instead of 10 p.m. in past years).
LUMINARY SALES
The Luminary sales drive continues at many churches and co-ordinator Marie Bowerman notes that the best place to buy your Luminary from a retail / public location would be Scotiabank. She adds that Scotiabank in Woodstock will match the donations made dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000.
At Relay, Luminaries surround the perimeter of the track to honour those who lost their battle to cancer, but also to recognize the cancer survivors who either received a clean bill of health or continue their journey to be cancer-free.
The blitz day for promoting Luminary sales will be Friday, May 22 and Saturday, May 23. The May 23rd date is important with the gigantic Relay Rummage Sale scheduled for the Foodland parking lot on Dundas Street. (Call the office at 537-5592 if you plan on having a table -- used articles, bake sale, barbecue, etc) On those two days, you can also purchase a Luminary at tables set up at No Frills (also a significant sponsor of the Relay food tent), Zehr's and Food Basics.

PLEDGE SHEETS
Cunningham added that the Oxford community office at 65 Springbank Ave North is a great place to pick up pledge sheets.
“One statistic we often use is that 210 Canadians die from cancer every day and we're working hard to find a cure,” added Cunningham.
“We do have a lot of fun information about Relay too, including an info sheet with a game plan about how you can raise $400 in 7 days.”

In a Woodstock Sentinel-Review story published back in December (see newspaper links below), Cunningham was already creating hype for the new format for Relay For Life.
We are excited to be evolving and strengthening our signature fundraiser,” said Cunningham. “We’re looking to take this powerful event to the next level and leave Relay for Life participants captivated by the experience and engaged in the Canadian Cancer Society’s important work of creating more survivors every day. We are evolving Relay for Life to help raise more money to fight cancer and help people facing cancer now.”

UPDATE: batons, bank night, dinner menu and volunteering

Relay For Life update: food, fun and flashlights

The organizing committee for Relay For Life in Woodstock is working night and day preparing for this year's Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser set for Saturday, June 13 – working night and day even though the event has been modified to a time frame of early evening (6 p.m.) to midnight.
The CASS track will continue to be surrounded by Luminaries for a special solemn ceremony to recognize those who have passed away from cancer, and to honour those still continuing their battle with the disease.
Actually, most items on the agenda certainly remain unchanged, including an opening ceremony (6 p.m., so earlier than previous years), survivors' lap, and a tent dedicated to learning more about cancer (and cancer prevention).
Currently, as of May 1, there are 305 registrants for Relay. The format has changed, so while many people are still signing up as a team and continuing their fun and creative group efforts for fundraising, many are signing up in small groups, or as a family, plus many many more as individuals.

ARRIVAL TIME
It is suggested by the committee that participants arrive as early as 4:30 on event day to complete the registration process.
This year, does not really feature a formal assigned and numbered campsite system as in the past, but you're certainly invited to bring your canopies, card tables, cameras, lawn chairs, games, flashlights, awnings, IPads and IPods.
BANK NIGHT
If you have a large sum of money collected, there will continue to be a bank night – Tuesday, June 9, 5:30 – 8:30 in the CASS cafeteria.
By the way, much of this information here will also be sent through email, so be sure every year to always 'opt-in' to receiving updates from Relay For Life via email.
BRING YOUR APPETITE
At Relay, registered participants and survivors, plus all volunteers (who also have to sign in), will still enjoy a dinner. The food sponsors for 2015 remain the same as recent years as Boston Pizza is creating a large lasagna and Caesar salad plate, while Swiss Chalet has chicken sandwiches and salad. The great folks at Pita Hut will be busy again as a meal / snack supplier. Just as in past years, Tim Horton's will be part of the event with (free) coffee and hot chocolate.

Another Relay favourite is French fries from Joe's Lunch. It must be pointed out as a reminder that participants pay for the fries from the Joe's Lunch truck, but Joe and his crew donate all proceeds to CCS.
By the way, the sponsorship sub-committee report notes they have almost reached their goal of $40,000.
BATONS
If you have been collecting paper towel rolls for a craft project and now you're not sure what to do with your stockpile, you can donate them to Relay For Life as the event – as you have noticed from all the publicity posters – is re-enforcing the idea of passing a baton. You can decorate a baton and bring it with you, or donate paper towel rolls to the CCS office at 65 Springbank Ave North in Woodstock.

CHILDREN'S TENT
Part of the fun at the children's area at Relay will include baton decoration crafts. The children's zone continues this year as well, 5 – 8 p.m. with countless games and prizes, and some games actually do include counting. If you don't have children, be sure to stop by this area as Home Depot and Good Beginning's Daycare always have a lot of fun, and the popcorn lady returns with free munchies.
VOLUNTEERS
Every year, organizers request more and more volunteers. It truly takes a small army of about 200 people to make Relay For Life successful. As they say, more hands make work lighter and also requires a larger lunch order from our friends at Pita Hut. If you have time to donate to Relay, contact the CCS office as crews are needed in set up (some carpentry experience is suggested but Ryan Noels is willing to train), luminaries, food serving, registrations, and clean up after the event.

Relay Rummage Sale is set for May 23

Foodland parking lot is destination for giant garage sale

On Saturday, May 23 you can buy a luminary to support Relay For Life, but you can also purchase a used book, blueberry muffins, and perhaps a hot-air popcorn maker and a DVD of an old movie.
The Rummage For Relay event is scheduled for May 23, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Foodland parking lot on Dundas Street.
This is not the first time Relay For Life in Woodstock has hosted a massive garage sale, but now it's a province-wide effort for most Relay events – a chance to raise money for your personal goal or for your team for the Canadian Cancer Society.
The motto for Relay is: Ready? Set. Relay!
The motto for Relay Rummage Sale is: Ready. Set. Shop.

Each team or participant in the rummage sale is asked to contact the CCS office at 65 Springbank Ave North by Friday, May 15 to register. Call Liz Wismer-VanMeer at (519) 537-5592.
Maybe your team wants to organize kids' games, or host a barbecue. Lots of possibilities will combine to make this a successful event again this year. Sign up your team for a baking sale, flower sales, used garage sale items, gently-worn clothes or gently read books or DVDs.

LUMINARY
The Relay committee selling and promoting luminaries will also be present that day. The price of a luminary is $5 to either honour someone who has passed away from cancer, or to recognize a cancer survivor.

The May 22-23 two-day span will also be a local blitz for luminary sales at: Relay Rummage Sale, but also at Zehr's, Scott's No Frills, Walmart, Food Basics and Sobeys.

Western General Insurance donates $10,000 to Relay '15

Many reasons why Woodstock office of large insurance company delivers large sponsorship contribution

Discovering a cure for cancer requires large amounts of on-going research dollars.
Relay For Life in Woodstock raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society to assist in many medical trials and studies to advance cancer treatments.
The Relay For Life, which is Saturday, June 13 (6 p.m. - midnight) at CASS high school in Woodstock, is pleased to announced it has renewed a very important sponsor as Western General Insurance (a division of The Economical Insurance Group) has agreed to contribute $10,000 to the Woodstock event -- an increase from its $7,000 sponsorship level of 2014.
“This is the third year Western General has been one of our significant sponsors,” notes Box Axon, sponsorship chair for Woodstock Relay. “At $10,000 they are now our largest contributor. It's quite a milestone. Western General is making quite an impact on Relay For Life.”
The Woodstock office for Western General is at 959 Dundas Street and manager of operations Ken Worsley described many reasons why they are involved.
“We have a lot of cancer survivors or I call them thrivers working here,” said Worsley. “We have a lot of employees and policy holders who live and work in Woodstock, and we like to give support where we can – to place our resources toward where it has the most impact.”
Western General under writer Dawn Alexander wrote the initial corporate business case to donate to Relay For Life in Woodstock, and Worsley noted the request went through various levels of management before gaining approval.
The Relay For Life sponsorship committee, which also includes Jim McNamara, Geoff Patterson, Lisa Woods and Adam Hagen, have created proposals for many local companies to donate or to also participate in an in-kind program such as Boston Pizza, Swiss Chalet and Tim Hortons with the event’s dinner. Relay has secured many other major donations, including Leon’s Furniture, Kinsdale Carriers, and media sponsors (marketing and advertising assistance) such as The Woodstock Sentinel-Review and Heart FM.
Axon, who is also a former event co-chair, says Relay For Life continues to seek support from area businesses.

“We find that a lot of companies want to join in and assist us. When we approach different companies they always welcome us with open arms because they know we’re doing something positive in our community and they too want to be part of something positive,” said Axon.
Relay For Life welcomes all enquiries about sponsorship or volunteering. Contact the office at 65 Springbank Ave North or call (519) 537-5592.

Asking, learning and walking; read about Train Walk Leaders

Training Walk Leaders now part of CCS's Relay For Life
Across the province of Ontario, the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life has created a new position on the organizing committee – a person to both motivate Relay participants and to simultaneously assist in each person's fundraising endeavours.
The volunteer Training Walk Leader organizes short group walks with individuals already registered for Relay For Life this year.
Sandy Smith (pictured here) is the Training Walk Leader (TWL) for Woodstock and her schedule is noted here.

The TWL will inspire participants and assist them in their fundraising ideas.
A CCS press release describes the TWL as: “a key source of information, guidance and inspiration as participants prepare for Relay For Life. TWL are an integral part of the Relay experience and provide face-to-face fundraising coaching and support to help ensure events realize their revenue goal through getting outside and leading walks."
As a long-time committee member, Sandy Smith is an ideal person for this role as it does combine walking for fitness and exercise along with a friendly discussion about Relay For Life.
The CCS's TWL description continues: “TWL will be trained on how to lead and execute walks for people at any physical level to build their endurance and to prepare them fully for the event.”
In Woodstock, Relay For Life has a 6-hour format on Saturday, June 13 – 6 p.m. - midnight.
“The TWL will provide a fun, supportive atmosphere for participants and provide timely fundraising coaching, tips and inspiration. . . TWL have a passion for Relay For Life and are committed to seeing participants reach their physical and fundraising goals,” said a CCS release.
()()()()()()()()()()()()()()
Kelly Jorgensen (pictured below) from the Oxford County community office explains the role this way:
“Now that you have registered for Relay, let’s keep the momentum going! Join us for walking sessions to prepare for Relay, have some fun, talk to other Relayers about successes, get some fundraising ideas and stay informed. The walks are roughly one hour at various times starting in April in Woodstock and are FREE!"
Please contact Kelly Jorgensen at 519-537-5592 or KJorgensen@ontario.cancer.ca to find out more details for Woodstock, but also Ingersoll and Tillsonburg – dates, times and locations!
