Learn lots about Relay For Life at a Captain's Night meeting
Captain's Night meetings are April 8 and May 14
Read about team activities planned for Relay For Life event, plus many notes on fundraising opportunities leading up to June 13
Among
the agenda items at the two Captain's Nights will be the many
all-night activities planned to keep all participants involved in
Relay For Life.
The
Canadian Cancer Society's major fundraiser is June 13-14 at CASS, but
the organizing committee has Captain's Nights meetings set for April
8 and May 14, both at 6:30 p.m., at Fanshawe College on Finkle
Street.
“It's
out goal to have every participant up, engaged, and involved all
night. “says Sandy Smith one of three co-chairs along with Deb Moss
and Bob Axon.
The
plan is to have various activities scheduled between 11 p.m. and 5
a.m., and to have teams helping to organize events / games to assist
in keeping up the energy for the entire 12-hour fundraiser. Ranging
from scavenger hunts and creating words with earned scrabble tiles,
the Relay For Life committee believes the participants will stay
“engaged” for the entire evening.
Other
reasons for team captains to attend the Captain's Night meetings is
to pick up their team kit, select their campsite, learn about
fundraising and recruitment, and book their bank night time. Speakers
for the first Captain's Night include Lori Husk and Bob Axon.
Organizers
note or wish that this could also be the year to expand horizons for
some people, who decide to create their own teams after previously
joining an established team.
As
of last Friday, Woodstock's Relay For Life had 33 teams signed up.
“That's
a good number because in past years most of the teams registered in
April and into early May,” said Tracy Bucholtz, fundraising
coordinator at the Oxford community office for CCS.
Axon's
sponsorship sub-committee reports good news with the addition of two
upgraded sponsors in Hunt Homes and BDO accountants, plus the
previously announced 'event sponsor' thanks to $7,000 received from
Western General insurance. Axon added that it's the Jamieson-Hilts
Insurance contribution which is directed toward paying for the
Harvard Association's flyover during the opening ceremony at 7 p.m.
Overall,
the sponsorship committee has raised $36,000 already this year versus
the $26,000 collected in 2012.
“We
continue to maintain our growth over the past two years,” added
Axon.
In
an on-going effort to make Relay For Life a family event, it has also
been confirmed that Home Depot will again sponsor the children's
activity tent.
Armor
Audio is set to return as sound system coordinators and Heart FM
personality Dan Henry returns as master of ceremonies.
FUN
on May 10
The
annual FUNdraiser Day has been successful as a co-op for teams to
join forces to raise money on the weekend of Mother's Day –
Saturday, May 10, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Foodland parking lot on
Dundas Street. Your team can confirm its participation and what it is
selling by contacting Liz Wismer at Heart FM (liz@1047.ca)
The FUNdraiser list of possible activities includes garage sale
items, barbecue, bake sales, popcorn, t-shirts, children's games,
face painting, homemade crafts (woodworking, knitting, etc.), and
selling flowers and plants.
If
you're considering volunteering with Relay For Life, especially if
you would be new to the group's list, contact Tracy Bucholtz at CCS
at (519) 537-5592 or event volunteer coordinator Janet Bragg at
janet@goodbeginningsday.com.
